McIlroy should be able to master first-round foes
Talk in clubhouses the world over was dominated at the start of this year by the ‘big three’, with Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy expected to be the irresistible forces of 2016. But Dustin Johnson has gatecrashed the party with some brilliant golf, moving up to number two in the rankings.
The old order of Spieth, Day and McIlroy are all early starters tomorrow morning, with Johnson out much later at 2.04pm.
Plenty of punters will be looking to get their Open off to a flyer by putting Spieth, Day and McIlroy in a first-round threeball treble, but that is a dangerous play. Spieth faces tough opposition in the shape of Justin Rose and Shane Lowry, as does Day, who has Danny Willett and Rickie Fowler for company.
