The disappointing season of Rory McIlroy continued yesterday with a first-round 74 in the Scottish Open at Dundonald Links.

McIlroy was four over par through four holes, improving as the round developed. Henrik Stenson opened with a triple-bogey seven, but fought back to level par. Rickie Fowler established himself as firm tournament favourite with a bogey-free five-under-par 67.

Fowler, a general 8-1 ante-post, held a share of the lead for much of the day, but 250-1 rag Mikko Ilonen surged to the front in the closing stages.

McIlroy, Stenson and Fowler lock horns again in the marquee threeball at 1.30pm. Fowler is a similar price to win the match and should be followed again. Fowler has comfort with every club in the bag at the moment, while McIlroy and Stenson are clearly lacking their A-game.
