Fenerbahce full of fight for scrap with Anderlecht
Vorskla could have victory in the bag
Two seriously decent fightbacks in the past fortnight have encouraged Fenerbahce to believe things are looking up as they prepare to face Anderlecht in Europa League Group D.
Fener came from two down to draw 2-2 at Anderlecht two weeks ago and last Friday did exactly the same at Galatasaray.
Neither side is pulling up trees domestically – Fener are a remote 15th in the Super Lig while Anderlecht are fourth in the Jupiler League. They’ve not finished outside the top three in Belgium since 1998.
Fener remain a decent prospect at home where they’ve beaten Spartak Trnava 2-0 and they’ll be buoyed by the fact that winless Anderlecht are struggling with injuries to James Lawrence, Andy Najar and Sven Kums.
Since Shakhtar and Dynamo Kiev have the top two places in Ukraine sewn up – they’ve been the top two in their Premier League in all but two of the last 22 seasons – finishing third behind them counts as something worthy of celebration.
Vorskla took that accolade last season and have taken solid domestic form into Europa League Group E.
Beaten but not disgraced at Arsenal, they were then leading Sporting Lisbon going into injury time before losing dramatically 2-1.
Unbowed, they won 1-0 at Qarabag last time to at least give themselves a sniff of qualification and they can complete the double over the Azeri outfit, who are going through an indifferent spell of form and may well have written off the Europa League having lost all three matches.
Rennes played Dynamo Kiev off the park at home only to lose 2-1 but they are still in the thick of the hunt for qualification from Group K.
Three of the six matches in this group have ended in draws and there doesn’t look a whole lot between any of the sides. The French side, whose last three away dates have produced wins at Monaco and Caen either side of a draw at St Etienne, can avoid defeat.
