Tuesday's EFL preview

Managers are often warned against returning to their former clubs, but Darren Ferguson is off to a strong start in his fourth spell in the Peterborough hotseat and his team look a solid bet to see off League One strugglers Burton at the Pirelli Stadium.

Ferguson has four Peterborough promotions on his CV and will be aiming to secure another by the end of the season.

He got an instant response from the Peterborough players with last Monday's 2-0 success at Port Vale, which was only the club's fourth away league win of the campaign.

And there is every chance of Ferguson masterminding a victory over the second-bottom Brewers, who have conceded 54 goals, the worst defensive record in the division.

Burton ended 2022 with victories at home to Lincoln and away to Forest Green to give them fresh hope in their survival struggle.

However, their defensive shortcomings were evident in recent hammerings at Morecambe and at home to Shrewsbury, and they look ideal opposition for a Posh team intent on making the most of their new manager bounce.

Fleetwood ran League One highflyers Sheffield Wednesday close in a 1-0 loss at Hillsborough on Saturday and they have every chance of responding with a home win over Portsmouth.

There is no room for complacency from Fleetwood, who are just five points above the relegation zone, but they look a much better side than they did last season when they stayed up with just 40 points and a minus 20 goal difference.

Smart recruitment and progressive coaching from rookie manager Scott Brown has made a huge difference for the Cod Army, who have a positive goal difference and have not lost any match by more than one goal.

Brown feels that Fleetwood should have picked up more points and his charges have a decent chance against Pompey, who have won just two of their last 16 league games.

Portsmouth were 2-0 winners at home to Exeter on Saturday, ensuring a positive start for their new manager, John Mousinho, but they are far from the finished article and could struggle on the Fylde coast.

Shrewsbury have climbed into League One's top half after superb victories away to Burton and at home to Cambridge and they can defeat another struggling side when taking on sixth-bottom MK Dons.

MK Dons boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 win at basement boys Forest Green on Saturday, but they have lost eight of 13 home league games and could struggle against the Shrews.
