Walsall regressed dramatically last season and it may pay to presume the trend continues downwards, with relegation a possibility.
The team bequeathed by Dean Smith was good enough to make the playoffs in 2015-16 under Jon Whitney, who was initially seen as no more than a stand-in but after guiding the Saddlers to third place was inevitably handed the reins for longer.
There was a sense that flirting with promotion was probably an overachievement and it certainly went flat last term.
