Match preview

Norwich began the season as antepost favourites to win the Championship but returned to the division with a bump last weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Cardiff.

The Canaries managed just a single shot on target in that game and another low-scoring affair looks likely when they host Wigan.

Dean Smith’s side were dragged into what became a tasty affair in Wales that saw a player on either side sent off.

It was clear that the effects of finishing the Premier League campaign as lowest scorers (23) and with the worst defensive record (84 conceded) have not been easily shaken off by the drop down in level.

Fans of the Yellows were hopeful for the new campaign given that they have won the Championship in their last two spells in the division. But the opening-day loss demonstrated that they may struggle for fluency going forward and getting the best out of their attacking talents.

League One winners Wigan also returned to the second tier last weekend, playing out a 0-0 draw against Preston North End in their opener.

The Latics’ standout performance in that match came from goalkeeper Ben Amos, who made a top double save just before half-time to keep the scores level.

Despite their resolute defensive display, manager Leam Richardson might have liked to see his side create more genuine opportunities - most of their efforts came from range or set pieces.

Neither side have shown enough going forward to convince that an end-to-end thriller is on the cards and a cagey affair may follow, particularly if the home support become frustrated early on.
