League One 2019-20: Top scorer predictions, odds, tips & betting guide

Kieran Agard can remain a danger to defences for MK Dons this season

Kieran Agard signed off from a stunning goalscoring season in Sky Bet League Two by signing a new contract at MK Dons and that augurs well for another productive campaign for the former Everton trainee.

The 29-year-old bagged 20 goals in 43 appearances helping the Dons to promotion last term and can flourish again up a level, a level he knows well.

Agard looks a decent bet to land top-scorer honours.

The striker was much in demand at the end of last term and with fellow frontman Chuks Aneke heading off, Paul Tisdale was delighted to see his top scorer re-sign. And Agard said all the right things about this being a club going places.

He’ll be a danger to defences throughout this division because he’s got pedigree and he’s done it before.

In 2013-14 he scored 22 League One goals helping Rotherham get promoted and a season later he scored 13 in 34 starts for Bristol City in their successful title-winning campaign in the same section.

He is the chosen penalty-taker, has found the net in pre-season and must be confident of another 20-goal year.

Gas man could set League One alight

One man who scored more goals than Agard in the basement last season was James Norwood, who hit the 30-mark for Tranmere and, having moved to Ipswich, heads the Golden Boot betting.

Norwood has been in great form pre-season for his new club with a hat-trick against Colchester the highlight but he looks short enough before a competitive ball has been kicked.

At a far bigger price, Jonson Clarke-Harris at Bristol Rovers is eye-catching.

A few bigger clubs have had Clarke-Harris on their radar but the fact that he has missed pre-season through injury ought to ensure he begins the campaign at the Memorial Stadium.

Clarke-Harris – along with boss Graham Coughlan – was Rovers’ saviour last season.

The Gas were second from bottom when the much-travelled 25-year-old was acquired from Coventry where he could barely get a look-in.

Successive bosses have struggled to get the best out of Clarke-Harris but Coughlan did. He stuck him down the middle and was rewarded with 11 goals in 16 appearances as Rovers didn’t just beat the noose, they went on to finish 15th.

Peterborough are a side full of attacking intent and Ivan Toney will be presented with chances galore.

The former Newcastle youngster scored 16 in 44 starts for Posh last season and has already struck up a fantastic understanding with new strike partner Mo Eisa.

Toney – and Eisa for that matter – has been prolific in pre-season and in a full campaign will surely overhaul last term’s tally.
