Wycombe fans should be sitting more comfortably than Gillingham followers

QPR’s loss could well be Wycombe’s gain with Chairboys’ diehards rightly delighted to see Northern Ireland striker Paul Smyth swap Loftus Road for Adams Park this season.

Many Rangers fans were disappointed to see the 21-year-old leave west London feeling he represented a seriously good option up front in the Sky Bet Championship, where he has scored a couple of goals.

Smyth looks a bright talent and he'll add sharpness to an attack which can’t be relying on Adebayo Akinfenwa and Craig Mackail-Smith forever.

The other of many signings which stands out is defender Jack Grimmer, once of Fulham, still only 25, and a key figure during Coventry’s League Two promotion of two seasons back.

Wycombe struggled last season needing three wins in their last five to stay up. Gillingham also struggled last season, finishing just a couple of points better off than the Buckinghamshire boys.

Both will probably struggle again this term, but Wycombe can turn the tables on the Gills, who are going to struggle to replace the goals of Tom Eaves while also improving a defence which was the second leakiest in the third tier last term.

No-nonsense Steve Evans has been shoehorned into the Priestfield dugout but with the raw materials at his disposal, and 21-goal Eaves having departed, this doesn’t look an easy task.

At the other end, Rotherham can win their battle of the relegated sides with Ipswich.

The last time the Millers came down they went straight back up again under Paul Warne, who is cute enough to appreciate what’s needed to succeed at this level.

Warne has lost good players – none more so than Will Vaulks to Cardiff – but brought in several more and they are set to challenge.

Ipswich probably should mount a promotion charge, too, but they don’t come with any guarantees.

Far more bodies left the club after relegation than have come in and decent signings are few and far between. One of the better ones, James Norwood, simply has to stay fit and a raft of injuries are sabotaging Paul Lambert’s planning.
