Blackpool v Sunderland
Sunderland have surged from 17th to the Championship playoff places after taking 13 points from six games and their quest for back-to-back promotions can be maintained with a victory at second-bottom Blackpool.
Promoted teams usually need time to adjust and Sunderland's task was made more difficult by injuries to strikers Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms, the latter of whom has since been recalled from loan by parent club, Everton.
However, Tony Mowbray's side have remained competitive and since the World Cup break they have kicked on.
Stewart has made an instant impact on his return from injury, scoring in each of the last three games, and he appears likely to start against the Tangerines, having being restricted to a substitute's role in Thursday's 4-1 victory at Wigan.
Blackpool may struggle to cope with Stewart and they need to keep a close eye on Manchester United loanee winger Amad Diallo, who has scored six goals in his last ten Sunderland appearances.
It looks a tricky time to be taking on the Black Cats and Blackpool are short of confidence after eight games without a victory.
Michael Appleton's injury-hit side competed well in a 2-1 loss at home to Sheffield United on Thursday but they have little scope to rotate and the short turnaround may work against them.
Portsmouth v Charlton
League One promotion hopefuls Portsmouth have slipped from first to tenth after winning just one of their last 13 matches and their miserable finish to 2022 could be followed by a disappointing New Year's Day result at home to struggling Charlton.
Pompey battled to a creditable 2-2 draw at home to highflying Ipswich on Thursday but there is still plenty of pressure on their manager, Danny Cowley, who was expected to have them in the thick of the promotion scrap.
Portsmouth need to put a run of wins together but they could meet a stern challenge from Charlton, who seem eager to impress recently-appointed manager Dean Holden.
The Addicks were competitive for the majority of Thursday's 3-1 loss at Oxford and they can take at least a point on the south coast.
Plymouth v MK Dons
Relentless League One leaders Plymouth are showing no signs of stopping and they can rack up their fourth successive league victory when taking on third-bottom MK Dons at Home Park.
Argyle have won 11 of 12 home league games and look solid odds-on favourites against the Dons, who failed to make much of an impact in Thursday's 2-0 loss at Peterborough.
Crewe v Tranmere
Tranmere have revived their League Two playoff push with back-to-back wins and they can wrap up a perfect week by beating struggling Crewe at Gresty Road.
Micky Mellon's side were 2-1 winners at promotion-chasing Barrow on Thursday and face an easier task against the Railwaymen, who have lost their last four matches.

First scorer
Rhys Oates Walsall v Mansfield
at 13-2 general
Classy Mansfield attacker Rhys Oates was dogged by injury problems in the early part of the season but he notched in a 2-1 success at Hartlepool on Thursday and could follow up with the opener at Walsall.
