Tuesday's EFL preview

The race for League Two playoff places is getting extremely tight and mid-table Stockport can make their presence felt by defeating struggling Crewe at Gresty Road.

Five points separate Salford in fifth from 15th-placed Doncaster in the fourth tier, but 12th-placed Stockport are a team to watch having recovered impressively from a slow start to the season.

Dave Challinor's Hatters have gathered 30 points from their last 16 matches but will be eager to get back to winning ways after Saturday's 1-0 loss at AFC Wimbledon.

However, there was no disgrace losing to the Wombles, who have suffered just one league defeat in 14 games, and an easier assignment is in store against the Alex, who are in danger of getting sucked into the relegation battle.

Crewe have taken five points from their last six fixtures and have not scored more than one goal in any of their last 24 games.

They are they second-lowest scorers in the division and their lack of potency leaves them vulnerable against Stockport, who have triumphed on five of their last eight League Two road trips.

Salford are clinging on to fifth place despite a 3-2 loss at relegation-threatened Crawley on Saturday, but they can respond with a home win over Walsall.

The weekend was a major disappointment for Salford, although they were up against a Crawley team boosted by the return of key players and fired up to impress new manager Scott Lindsay, who was taking charge for the first time.

Ammies manager Neil Wood will ask for a response and his team may have better luck against Walsall, who put a huge effort into Saturday's 1-0 loss at home to Leicester in the FA Cup fourth round.

Walsall might have appreciated a break after their exertions against the Foxes and it would be no great surprise if performance levels dip, allowing Salford to take advantage.
