Stage nine preview

The mountains are again calling as the first week of this year's Tour concludes with a 193km test from Aigle in Switzerland to the French ski resort of Chatel Les Portes du Soleil.

And having seen Tadej Pogacar take control of the general classification with stage victories on Thursday and Friday, and Wout van Aert do the same in the race for the green jersey on Saturday, stage nine could be one for the breakaway.

There are four categorised climbs along the route, the hardest three of which come in the second half of the day, but there is nothing too brutal on the menu.

Lennard Kamna would be a likely candidate to win from a break providing he has overcome his exertions on stage seven, when his hopes of a second Tour stage win were dashed by Pogacar in the dying metres of La Super Planche des Belles Filles.

The German climber's sole Tour win in 2020 came on a remarkably similar finish to Sunday's - a first-category climb followed by an uphill drag to the line.

Another to consider is Belgian Tim Wellens, who would complete the set of victories at all three Grand Tours were he to succeed.

Wellens has been inconspicuous by his absence but he is a proven stage hunter at the biggest races and warmed up for the Tour with second place overall at the Tour of Belgium.
