Stage four preview

After a rousing Grand Depart in Denmark, the Tour de France resumes in its homeland on Tuesday with what should be an intriguing trundle across France’s northern coast.

Stage four sees the peloton tackle six category-four climbs on the 171.5km route between Dunkirk and Calais, the last of which tops out 11 kilometres from the finish and has the potential to set up a lightning-fast finish if the group come back together.

Corners 1.4km and 600m from the line shouldn’t overly affect the result with the pan-flat run-in suiting the speedsters.

Arguably the fastest of those is Quick-Step ace Fabio Jakobsen, who showed his prowess with victory on stage two on Saturday.

His lead-out was again superb on Sunday but the Dutchman’s positioning let him down as Team BikeExchange Dylan Groenewegen took the victory.

Both should be in the mix again, as will yellow-jersey holder Wout van Aert, who has finished second in all three stages in 2022.

Such consistency has set the Belgian on course to win the green jersey, but his rivals’ raw pace means he could come up short again on Tuesday.

While the climbs could take some sting out of the sprinters’ legs, they should have enough in reserve and with Quick-Step's lead-out train looking so good, a second win could beckon for Jakobsen.
