Stage 11 preview

Magnus Cort claimed a second Tour de France stage win of his career on Tuesday as the second week of this year's race began with a bang.

The Dane emerged victorious from the day's breakaway, timing his bike throw to perfection to deny Australia's Nick Schultz on the line in Megeve.

Tadej Pogacar remains in the yellow jersey but German climber Lennard Kamna, who was part of Tuesday's breakaway, is now second after the main contenders trailed in almost nine minutes down on Cort.

There is another Alpine test is conquer on Wednesday as the peloton ascend the picturesque Lacetes de Montverrier and two of the Tour's most famous climbs - the Col du Telegraphe and Galibier - before a summit finish atop the Col du Granon.

It's a brutal day out, especially given it comes a day before the riders visit Alpe d'Huez for the first time in four years on Thursday, and after the breakaway took their chances on stage nine and ten, this looks a prime candidate for a GC battle to unfold.

Last year's one-two of Pogacar and Dane Jonas Vingegaard have looked head and shoulders above the rest of the GC pretenders and stage honours will likely be fought out between the pair if the final climb is a yellow-jersey battle.

The state of Pogacar's UAE team adds further intrigue. The Slovenian had already lost Vegard Stake Laengen last week and Kiwi climber George Bennett was forced to withdraw prior to stage ten due to a positive Covid test.

Another of Pogacar's mountain lieutenants Rafal Majka also tested positive but was allowed to start week two due to his PCR sample being deemed to show a "low risk of infectivity". His situation will continue to be monitored.

Vingegaard, by contrast, still has a full team at his disposal and it would be no surprise to see his Jumbo-Visma squad try to expose any weakness in Pogacar's team on the final climb.

Whether there are any weaknesses in Pogacar himself, however, is open to debate.
