On paper yesterday’s stage looked assured to end in a bunch sprint but the strong winds that battered the course saw the sprinters outfoxed by Peter Sagan and Chris Froome.

Nobody would have predicted that Froome would end up following the world champion home on such a stage but that’s how it panned out as, each with a teammate in tow, they formed a potent team time-trial from 20km out all the way to the finish.
