Liege-Bastogne-Liege preview
With overall wins at the last two Tours de France courtesy of Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic’s hat-trick of Vuelta crowns, Slovenia is fast becoming one of the pre-eminent cycling nations.
Pogacar and Roglic are also the last two victors of cycling’s oldest Monument, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, which will be staged for a 108th time on Sunday.
Tour de France champ Pogacar is favourite to defend his crown, a tag he also carried into Wednesday’s Fleche Wallonne. He could finish only 12th on the mighty Mur de Huy having been handily placed on the decisive final ascent, although it would be folly to dismiss his chances of a repeat success in La Doyenne on Sunday given his victory last year and third behind Roglic in 2020.
Roglic has opted not to take part this year but Pogacar is not the only Slovenian to harbour realistic hopes of victory.
Bahrain-Victorious rider Matej Mohoric has enjoyed a superb Classics campaign, producing a decisive downhill attack to take victory at Milan-San Remo five weeks ago.
He has followed up his victory in the first Monument of the season with a number of strong showings, including when fifth at Paris-Roubaix last Sunday.
If those exertions have not taken the edge off, Mohoric, who also boasts a solid record in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, looks a sound each-way play at 18-1.
Mohoric finished fourth in 2020 and tenth last year at LBL and his versatile tactics give him a number of cards to play in what is usually one of the hardest races of the season.
