La Fleche Wallonne preview

Picking the winner of the midweek Ardennes Classic La Fleche Wallonne has been relatively straightforward in recent years with only three different winners since 2014.

Alejandro Valverde conquered the mighty Mur de Huy four years running between 2014 and 2017, and world champion Julian Alaphilippe has picked up the baton in the last four years with three victories. Marc Hirschi in 2020, when the race was moved to the autumn, has been the only other victor in that time.

The Walloon Arrow is almost always decided on the final finishing ascent of the Mur, a 1.3km ramp with an average gradient of nearly ten per cent but which pitches up to more than 19 per cent 500m from the finish.

It's a unique test and one in which knowing the exact time to attack is crucial.

Dual Tour de France hero Tadej Pogacar is a worthy adversary for Alaphilippe, but the world champion is a master at timing his finishing burst on the Mur and warmed up for his title defence with a stage win and two seconds at the recent Tour of the Basque Country.
