Race preview

From 2014 to 2017 no cyclist could lay a finger on evergreen Spaniard Alejandro Valverde in the midweek Ardennes Classic, La Fleche Wallonne.

The veteran is a five-time winner of the event having also triumphed in 2006 but his stranglehold on the race has loosened since the last of his victories.

World champion Julian Alaphilippe took over the mantle in 2018 and 2019 before talented youngster Marc Hirschi claimed glory atop the fabled Mur de Huy last year.

All three may be battling it out for the minor placing this time around, however, as Vuelta a Espana winner Primoz Roglic looks in ominous form.

Roglic won the general, points and mountains classification at the Tour of the Basque Country earlier this month and the punchy finish to Wednesday's race is right up his street.

The Wall of Huy reaches gradients of almost 20 per cent in parts and is similar to a number of uphill stage finishes Roglic has made his own in the last couple of years.
