A series of mini-races were fought out on the gruelling climb to the Emosson dam yesterday but Chris Froome extended his lead in the one that counts most as Bauke Mollema and, most significantly, Nairo Quintana cracked in the final kilometres.

Up front, the race for stage victory was won by Ilnur Zakarin – yesterday’s 20-1 tip in Racing Post Sport – from the remnants of a 14-man breakaway that led by around 13 minutes from the yellow-jersey group going into the final 30km of climbing.

As Zakarin powered away from Sunday’s winner Jarlinson Pantano and Rafal Majka, who leads the King of the Mountains by 83 points, the yellow-jersey group was whittled down to single figures until Richie Porte broke clear towards the end, only to be chased down by Froome as the others were left behind.
