There isn’t much that Peter Sagan hasn’t won in his illustrious career but a victory in the first Monument of the season, Milan-San Remo, is one things missing from his CV.

In fairness the three-time reigning world champion couldn’t have come much closer last year as he was beaten by the width of a tyre by Michal Kwiatkowski in a photo-finish alongside Julian Alaphilippe.

The trio broke clear on the race’s fabled final climb – the Poggio di San Remo – and Sagan will likely employ similar tactics to shake off his rivals again.

Sagan is an outstanding rider and worthy favourite to go one better than last year but QuickStep Floors have a typically strong challenge and could serve it up to the Slovakian.

The Belgian team have high hopes of Alaphillipe again but also of Italian Elia Viviani who has had a sparkling start to the season. If he can get over the Poggio, he has strong credentials in the sprint.

Recommendation
E Viviani
