Chris Froome is 11-8 to add the Vuelta a Espana to his three Tour de France triumphs after finishing fourth on a punishing stage-three course.

The summit finish of the Mirado de Ezaro was always likely to cause an early reshuffling of the general classifaction and so it proved as Froome, Alejandro Valverde and Esteban Chaves all gained time on their red-jersey rivals.
