Vadeni and Alpinista scoop the points but Mishriff gives Phils Winners a fillip

It is hardly surprising that Vadeni was selected by just 0.3 per cent of Tote Ten To Follow stables before the competition began at the start of June.

At that point the Aga Khan’s star, who began his career in the provinces at La Teste de Buch, had conquered nothing bigger than the Group 3 Prix de Guiche and was a work in progress.

Those who had the imagination to see how that work was developing were rewarded with 55.65 points for the Churchill colt’s success in the Coral-Eclipse to take his tally for the season to 90.85 points.

That places the Prix du Jockey Club winner behind only Naval Crown, who also has a meagre band of admirers (0.6 per cent of stables), in the list of points-scoring horses.

While none of the leading teams in the competition put Vadeni in their squads, the Coral-Eclipse did have a significant effect on the leaderboard as luckless runner-up Mishriff collected 14.90 points for 10.2 per cent of stables, including Phils Winners 2, who are hoisted into third place, just 2.29 points behind the leader DB17.

Royal Ascot scorer Coltrane followed up with 17.40 points at Sandown (but for only 0.1 per cent of stables) to lift him to 12th in the rankings.

While Vadeni was the biggest points scorer of the week thanks to his cross-Channel raid, the second largest haul went in the opposite direction as Alpinista took the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud to rack up 37.5 points for 4.0 per cent of stables, who can now dream of Arc glory.
