Tonight's racing: three runners who catch the eye at Kempton and Dundalk
On the eve of the Flat turf season getting started there are two all-weather cards to whet the appetite at Dundalk (5.30) and Kempton (5.45). Here are three runners to note this evening...
Zihba
7.00 Dundalk
With the Flat turf season starting on Saturday in Britain, and Sunday in Ireland, thoughts are already turning to who might win the first Classics of the season.
To that end, there is a potential Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas contender at Dundalk this evening in the shape of the unbeaten Zihba.
Trained by Fozzy Stack, Zihba was a stylish winner at the course in December and is strong favourite to follow up tonight. He holds an entry in the Group 3 Gladness Stakes on April 8 as well at the colts’ Classic at the end of May, so could be a name to note.
Oud Metha Bridge
7.45 Kempton
Could it be a big 24 hours for Oud Metha Bridge?
First up, the four-year-old contests the mile handicap at Kempton tonight when he bids to follow up his victory over course and distance last month.
Oud Metha Bridge, who was bought by trainer Julia Feilden for the In It To Win Partnership in October, could then head to Doncaster on Saturday where he has crept in at the bottom of the weights for the 32Red Spring Mile.
Too Many Diamonds
8.45 Kempton
In 34 starts on the Flat Too Many Diamonds has failed to win a race. Mind you, he was 0-7 over jumps before he joined trainer Dan Skelton early last year.
You may recall, Too Many Diamonds was plucked out of a selling hurdle by Skelton, who promptly won four races with him in one week in mid-May last year.
Too Many Diamonds has not raced since September and returns to the course having had wind surgery. If he can transfer his improved performances over jumps back to the Flat, he would look potentially well handicapped off a mark of just 45.
