Tonight's racing: three runners who catch the eye at Doncaster and Hexham
It is a Classic day on both sides of the Atlantic but between Newmarket and Louisville there is the small matter of meetings from Doncaster and Hexham. Doncaster gets underway on At The Races from 5.15pm with Hexham supporting the action from 5.35pm. Here are three runners worth watching . . .
Salateen
6.50 Doncaster
Salateen has spent much of his life running in particularly good races and tonight’s task is against easier opposition than he has faced in a while.
The six-year-old did not have the best of winters in Dubai or on the all-weather, but his handicap mark has dropped a little as a result meaning he runs in this contest off 102. He has won off marks higher in the past.
Underfoot conditions could potentially be a problem, but you would hope Salateen would be able to take a step back in the right direction at the very least tonight.
Crest
7.05 Hexham
Once represented the dominant pairing of Gordon Elliott and Michael O’Leary, but it would be more than fair to say he was never one of their stars.
Picked up by new trainer Micky Hammond last year, Crest has not really fired in three starts for the yard and has had a wind operation since his last outing.
Along with that, the seven-year-old wears cheekpieces for the first time and Alain Cawley takes over from the conditional and amateur riders who have been partnering him previously.
Bedrock
7.50 Doncaster
This horse has excelled himself since undergoing a wind operation and moving to Iain Jardine's yard.
He won on his debut for the stable before running a massive race to be third in a Grade 1 at Aintree, looking the likeliest winner at one point.
He returns to the Flat for the first time since 2016 this evening and races off the same mark as when a close third that day. Given his improved hurdles form, and with Jamie Gormley taking off 5lb, he looks an interesting contender.
