Title-leader joins greats with 45th winner of the month

Flat jockeys' championship leader Jim Crowley joined a select list of riders to have ridden 45 winners in a calendar month when he claimed a narrow victory on Bazzat at Chelmsford on Thursday night.

In his relentless pursuit of a maiden title, Crowley has been so prolific this month that he has reached the same tally posted by riding greats Fred Archer, in June 1884, and Sir Gordon Richards, in August 1949.

Racing Post historian John Randall said: "It won't be possible to say Crowley has definitely broken the record even if he surpasses 45 because the record for the most winners in a month by a jockey or trainer in Britain isn't something anyone has ever researched."
