Racecourse report: entry, food and pint prices from Wincanton
Wincanton
Date visited: Thursday, November 17, 2022
Was it a big day?
No, but there seemed to be a decent crowd and you're always assured of a warm welcome at Wincanton despite temperatures feeling more like winter than autumn. As usual, top local trainer Paul Nicholls had runners on the card.
How much was entry on the gate?
£22.
Other than restaurants/hospitality, what were the food and beverage options?
The Badger Bar was busy and offered fish and chips and pies from £12, which was not crazy given the portions appeared fairly decent.
There was also tapas, featuring mac and cheese bites, garlic and herb potatoes, pigs in blankets, mini brisket pies and crab cakes. £15 would have got you three plates.
What's the damage?
Can of water: £1.50
Cheapest pint: £5.50 for Sharps Atlantic Pale Ale, Carling and Badger
Guinness: £6.00
Champagne: £76 for a bottle of Moet & Chandon
Pie: £12 (with chips, mashed potatoes and veg)
All drink prices taken from the main racecourse bar, or where there are multiple bars, one chosen at random
What were the fish and chips like?
Not a lot wrong with them, although £12 is perhaps a little steep when you're eating out of cardboard, but I don't suppose much can be done about that.
And the queues?
There were queues, but there were plenty of enthusiastic, helpful and energetic staff to deal with customers and things flowed.
