'The market's still vibrant' - on-course bookies positive ahead of Cheltenham

Positive indicators for the future of the on-course betting ring have been taken from the first week of crowds returning to the racecourse since March, with anticipation building for Cheltenham on Friday and Saturday when a full house of 2,000 spectators is forecast for both days of the International meeting.

While layers have reported trade to be at a lower level than usual with restrictions on attendances, those who have traded at tracks in England are optimistic an appetite remains for on-course betting.

John Hooper, managing director of on-course firm Sid Hooper, which swooped for the pitches previously owned by Coral and Ladbrokes in October, has operated at six meetings since bookmakers were allowed back and was encouraged by the experience.
