Tommy Stack, who gained everlasting fame when partnering Red Rum to a historic third victory in the Grand National and who became a Classic-winning trainer, is to retire at the end of the year.

He announced the news on Sunday, when he confirmed that his son and long-time assistant Fozzy will take over the licence at Thomastown Castle stables in County Tipperary.

Stack started training in 1986 after a highly successful riding career. Twice champion jump jockey in Britain, he took over from Brian Fletcher on Red Rum and raised the roof at Aintree in 1977 with a third win that has never been matched.
