'That was incredible' - Fisher nets biggest career win at expense of big names
Thursday: Chelmsford
Rising star apprentice Taylor Fisher was overcome after leaving weighing-room titans William Buick and Ryan Moore in his wake as he registered his first win at the Essex track on Mukha Magic.
The former champion pony racer was not afraid to hold his position on the Gay Kelleway runner in the early stages of the 1m6f handicap, and they made just about all to deny the efforts of Buick on Planet Legend.
Fisher, who is attached to the Archie Watson stable, is now just one shy of double figures in his first season as a 7lb claimer, and it is easy to see why he is in demand.
"That was incredible, what an experience," he said. "That was the highest-profile race I've ridden in and against the highest-profile jockeys such as Ryan Moore and William Buick.
"I came here for one ride and I'll go anywhere for a winner. I know the owner and I'm delighted to ride a winner for him and now the horse has registered a hat-trick. I'm attached to Archie Watson who has been very supportive."
Crystal clear in the first
It was a wet start to the afternoon and the weather seems to follow the first-race winner, Crystallium, as she had missed a similar winning opportunity at Kempton eight days previously when the meeting was called off due to waterlogging.
Unfortunately part-owner Elaine Nolan had jetted in from Majorca for the Kempton gig but was unable to return to see the Expert Eye newcomer score handsomely for Tom Clover and Andrea Atzeni.
Smartly away and always travelling well on the shoulder of previous winner Peace Of Mine, Crystallium was in command a furlong out and went on to win by three and a half lengths.
The breeze-up purchase holds an entry in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket next month and could well get a mile on this evidence.
Part-owner Paul Hancock said: "You could have knocked me down with a feather when Tom rang me the other day to ask if he could put her in the Rockfel so I know she must have been showing up well at home.
"There is a restricted novice at Goodwood worth £100,000 that she could go for, and the last time Andrea wore my silks was when he won the Racing Post Trophy on Marcel."
It wasn't really a day for sunglasses, but it didn't stop a filly of the same name winning the mile maiden for Simon and Ed Crisford later on the card, completing a double for Atzeni.
Cup Wonder makes all
There were more than 5,000 people at the track as part of a link-up with brewer's Greene King, with the feature being the sixth running of the Chelmsford City Cup.
Not too many in the bars and marquees found the winner, the Stan Moore-trained Wonder Elzaam, who made just about all under John Egan.
The 12-1 chance enjoyed a productive spell in Bahrain last winter, but was registering for the first time in 2022 in this £40,000 contest.
Egan said: "Gelding has been the making of him and he enjoyed making the running out there. It's great prize-money and hopefully he can enjoy a productive autumn."
