When the rain fell on Goodwood last August, Here Comes When shocked the mighty Ribchester to land the Group 1 Sussex Stakes. He was the beneficiary of the British weather once more as he took the Unibet Mile, better known as the Group 3 Superior Mile.

The eight-year-old was winning for the first time since the Sussex 13 months ago and Anna Lisa Balding, who was in the plane that skidded on the Haydock infield before racing, said: "My day just got a whole lot better. He's loved by everyone at home, he's been a great horse for us and obviously it's fantastic for the Hays [owners Jim and Fitri], as they're great supporters of ours."

Conditions are evidently important to Here Comes When. Trainer Andrew Balding, who did not attend as he is participating in Sunday's Great North Run, had said as much in the run-up to the race and his wife added: "Of course, the ground makes a big difference for him – we know that, everyone knows that. The best thing is how the ground slows all the others down, but he keeps going through it."
