Charlie Appleby was able to celebrate a good plan and a good horse yesterday as Penglai Pavilion and Sobetsu landed the trainer a 13-1 double stacked full of potential.

Penglai Pavilion’s success in the Betfred Cesarewitch Trial was the culmination of a cunning plan that was expertly executed by William Buick, who rode both of Appleby’s winners in the Godolphin colours.

Setting just a modest pace in the 2m 2f handicap, Buick kicked on decisively in the closing stages to catch out the stayers who were unable to match his superior turn of foot.
