Pat Coyne proves local hero for John Queally under Jody McGarvey drive
Sunday: Tramore
Pat Coyne provided local trainer John Queally with a poignant victory in the 2m5f handicap chase.
In a year in which he lost his stable star Arcadian Sunrise to illness shortly after finishing third at Royal Ascot, Queally had something to celebrate when the Fairly Ransom gelding justified 3-1 favouritism under Jody McGarvey.
The eight-year-old did not look the most likely winner coming down to the second-last with a wall of five horses in front of him, but he responded to every urging to run out a four-length winner.
Queally said: "It's great to win at my local track. He missed one down the back and it put him on the back foot a little, but he jumped the last well. We've got such enjoyment out of this horse. Every day he goes out and makes a few quid."
Lady on top
There was no doubting the easiest winner of the day – James Barcoe's Influential Lady in the 2m5f beginners' chase.
The daughter of Doyen was stepping up in trip after four chase runs over 2m4f or shorter, and it seemed to do the trick as she won with a comfortable nine and half lengths to spare over favourite Hollymount.
It was only Barcoe's second winner of the season and he said: "We always hoped she might win if we stepped her up in trip. I'd say she would get three miles on ground like that today and ridden that way."
