Not a vintage Arc but marvellous mare Alpinista produces another career best

Alpinista produced a career-best performance to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, although the race will not go down as one of the strongest runnings of recent years.

Under a very good ride from Luke Morris, Alpinista won her sixth consecutive Group 1, a performance which earned her a Racing Post Rating of 124. Her previous highest RPR of 121 had come on her most recent start in the Yorkshire Oaks.

This Arc would rate as the joint seventh-best on RPRs in the last decade, matching the level Found achieved when winning at Chantilly in 2016 but not nearing the heights of Treve in 2013 (131) or Enable in 2017 (129).

The five-year-old was in receipt of the 3lb allowance for fillies and mares and is the sixth female winner in the last ten runnings.

Titleholder, the main Japanese hope, ensured a good pace from the front before giving way in the final two furlongs. He ultimately went too hard in testing conditions and can do much better returning to a quicker surface.

The rain-softened ground favoured last year's winner Torquator Tasso, who produced a very good performance to finish third, running to the same RPR of 126 achieved for last year's win. He arguably was a little unlucky, being the only horse in the first seven to come from a double-digit draw.

Vadeni, who did not get the run of the race in the Irish Champion Stakes, was always closing but never able to go by the winner, losing by just half a length in second and posting a career-best RPR of 126. His stablemate Al Hakeem also ran very well to finish fourth. It is possible he did not quite see out the new trip and would be well fancied back over ten furlongs.
