Last-gasp dead-heat completes 8,264-1 treble for Andrew Mullen
Friday: Newcastle
A dead-heat aboard 28-1 shot After John completed an extraordinary afternoon for Andrew Mullen, who landed a 8,264-1 treble.
Mullen is one of the busiest jockeys on the all-weather circuit and he advertised his talents with a variety of rides aboard the three outsiders.
His partnership with Mintnthat, who he had ridden for all of his previous ten starts, paid off in the mile handicap after the three-year-old got up by a neck in the shadow of the post to strike at 18-1.
The rider did not have to fight so hard in the following race over the same distance as 14-1 shot Roudemental was positioned prominently and showed a decisive turn of foot to beat Pisanello by a length and a quarter.
The day was capped off with a remarkable success aboard After John in the first division of the 6f handicap, with the sprinter sweeping from last to share the spoils with Embour.
Progressive Pocket
A gelding operation seems to have transformed juvenile Pocket The Packet, who recorded his second course win in the 6f nursery under Franny Norton.
The son of Mayson finished last in each of his first three starts but hasn't looked back since and should be up to completing a hat-trick for George Boughey.
