'He's a proper homebred' - Kaleb provides Murphy with a long-awaited tonic

Kalane provided Amy Murphy with her first big winner in 2016 and the mare's first foal Kaleb got off the mark for a full-circle success in the 2m maiden hurdle.

The 3-1 shot made mistakes at the second and third last flights but Jack Quinlan got a super jump out of the four-year-old at the last and he won by three and a half lengths.

"He's a lovely horse," Murphy said. "His finishing position didn't do him justice at Compiegne, he was too far back and it ended up being more of an education that anything.

"It was nice to see him do it in that style, he couldn't have been more professional – he jumped, travelled and quickened."

Murphy hopes this is just the beginning for Kaleb's dam Kalane as a broodmare. She won a Listed chase at Doncaster on her final start.

"Kalane was actually in foal with Kaleb in her last couple of runs," the trainer said. "It's quite a cool story, he's a proper homebred and hopefully it's just the beginning as Kaleb is her first foal."

It was a second winner of the campaign for the Newmarket-based trainer and she is looking forward to kicking on.

She added: "We've got a small and select team of about ten horses, but they're a nice bunch and we'll look to step up Kaleb into something better next time out."

Quinlan quickly doubled up on the card aboard the Richard Bandey-trained La Breille in the 2m juvenile hurdle for fillies.
