Germany-based trainer Mario Hofer recorded his first Flat winner in Britain when the Hayley Turner-ridden Gamgoom landed the 6f handicap at Chelmsford.

Hofer has a 100 per cent strike-rate with the jumps horses he has sent to Britain – his only previous runner Surin landed a Market Rasen bumper in October 2018 – but success on the Flat had eluded him until Gamgoom, a nine-year-old he adores, crossed the line in front under a power-packed ride.

Gamgoom was easy to back at 22-1, but the son of Exceed And Excel battled on gamely to beat Rock On Baileys by a length and a quarter.
