Gallant second for Clondaw Warrior in American St Leger
Willie Mullins is plotting an ambitious Melbourne Cup foray with Clondaw Warrior after his Galway Hurdle hero again showcased his remarkable versatility when claiming second in the American St Leger on Saturday behind favourite Da Big Hoss.
Clondaw Warrior found the rapid pace of US racing a challenge in the early stages as he raced at full throttle towards the rear of the field. But the nine-year-old is tough, talented and stays strongly, and he made up ground hand over fist under Seamie Heffernan in the closing stages to pick off all bar one of his rivals in the Arlington Grade 3.
“We were very happy with him and he's fine this morning,” Mullins reported yesterday. “He broke slowly for this game over here and, if we were to do it again, we'd probably change a few things, but we learned plenty.
