Fear may have been something the bookies held at the halfway point of the six-race card – they certainly do for Champions Day – but Fearsome relieved some of the tension when upsetting long odds-on favourite Mon Port.

After the first three market leaders had hosed up, Olly Murphy's 2-9 chance Mon Port looked likely to make it four winning market leaders, tanking his way through most of the 2m novice hurdle. However, his early exertions told late on, allowing Fearsome to sweep through to claim the spoils under a patient ride from Jack Quinlan.

The four-year-old, a useful double winner on the all-weather, provided a first jumps winner for Nick Littmoden since the former multiple champion all-weather trainer's comeback last year, when the plan was to switch his emphasis to jumpers.
