It was the final fixture of 2016 at Downpatrick and racecourse manager Richard Lyttle provided the media with a thoughtful parting gift – a voucher for a complimentary drink after the last race. But while unsteadiness may have featured off-track, Ballela Boy was surefooted on it, barely needing to accelerate out of second gear to win the 2m6f maiden hurdle.

David Mullins was in the saddle as the duo took care of Brightest Flame. Ballela Boy has the look of a good, old-fashioned staying chaser and trainer Gordon Elliott is already looking forward to seeing what he can do over fences next season.
