Reputations, once earned, are easily leant on. And Franny Norton, acclaimed as the master of Chester, does not need to show he rides the Roodee extremely well.

But he has rarely looked better here than he did in delivering a remarkably daring ride to get up late on hot favourite Fastnet Tempest in the feature 7½f handicap.

The Victoria Cup winner had been drawn in stall one but was sluggish out of the gates and was still last as they turned for home. Norton dived for the cutaway and stormed up the short straight to catch Penwortham, winning by a neck.
