Scottish racing fans were left disappointed when all three days of the Ayr Gold Cup meeting were called off, but regulars may still have seen a future Group race contender this autumn in the remarkable Brandon Castle.

A step up in class could be on the cards for the revitalised stayer, who scored his fifth victory in his last six starts by making all under Andrew Mullen in the 1m5f handicap.

He was rated just 62 when he joined Archie Watson but his latest six-length success came off a mark of 90 – including a 6lb penalty for winning at Chester just three days previously.
