Ayr: 'He's done wonders for me' - Murphy's delight as Thomas Darby successfully restarts chasing career
Thomas Darby recorded his first success in 14 months to continue a good spell for Olly Murphy, who took particular delight in seeing another of his elder flagbearers return to winning form.
The breakthrough, a first since the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury in November 2021, comes a few days on from Itchy Feet also breaking his drought for the yard.
Thomas Darby has looked strong this season as a staying hurdler and responded well in the 3m novice handicap chase, holding off 5-6 favourite Gold Cup Bailly in his first start over fences since November 2019.
Murphy said: "He jumped really well and got into a rhythm, it was a great ride from Sean [Bowen]. It was a good performance.
"Chasing was a different avenue for him, I don't know where we'll go next but we'll probably try and find another novice chase and keep his confidence up. It's brilliant to win with him."
Thomas Darby and Itchy Feet famously filled the places behind Klassical Dream in the 2019 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and Murphy was full of praise for his more experienced stars.
He added: "The horses have got me going and everyone at home has kept them in good form, which is really pleasing," the Warwickshire trainer added. "I'm chuffed to have won with those older horses who have done wonders for my short career."
Murphy recorded his eighth winner in the last two weeks when Booster Bob won the 2m bumper. It also completed a treble for Bowen.
