'Quite a few fit the bill in the Scottish National but these are the two I like'

With Aintree's spruce fences being less fearsome these days, it could just about be argued that the main distinguishing factor between the Grand National and its Scottish equivalent is no longer the obstacles, but the bends.

Aintree generally offers a series of long straights, the best part of a mile in length, and turns that are either so tight they are over in one movement, or so sweeping they barely register. Ayr is different. The Scottish National follows a distinct pattern: go three and a half furlongs, jumping four or five fences, then take a long 180-degree bend. Repeat five times and you will find yourself on the slightly downhill run to four out.
