Tonight's action: three horses it could pay to follow
It is one of the evenings on which keeping an eye on the racing is usually well rewarded. The Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown is worth the admission money alone, while there are other form lines to test and horses who should be able to reverse recent trends on rain-softened ground.
Tathmeen
6.00 Newbury
Tathmeen was third to Invincible Army over 6f at Newmarket last month on the more recent of his two starts. The winner went on to be fourth in the July Stakes, while runner-up Tribal Quest was a clear second in a strong race at the July festival and fourth-placed Rockies Spirit, 66-1 on the day, won at Thirsk. Now Tathmeen has his chance to boost the form of that race.
The Pentagon
7.30 Leopardstown
The Tyros Stakes has long been an above-average juvenile Group 3, but Jim Bolger took it up a level in the last decade with the victories of Teofilo and New Approach. In recent years Aidan O'Brien has typically sent one of his best juveniles as each of his last six winners, going back to Rip Van Winkle in 2008, has gone on to land at least one Group 1.
The Pentagon looks to be the chosen one from Ballydoyle this year following a thumping maiden success at the Curragh this month. He is now ante-post Derby favourite being a son of Galileo. New Approach, Cape Blanco and Deauville all won this race, so victory here need not be an indication that The Pentagon will be too quick for Epsom.
Little Lady Katie
7.50 Doncaster
The feature fillies' handicap at Doncaster is a tightly matched contest, but conditions look set to be in favour of the Karl Burke-trained Little Lady Katie, who much like Quiet Reflection in the same colours is especially potent when the mud is flying.
Little Lady Katie has won on good ground, but her other two successes have come on soft and heavy ground – from far fewer attempts, too. Of slightly greater concern is the drop in trip to 7f, but the additional emphasis on stamina provided by soft ground should be enough.
