Third and deciding meeting between Dramatic Queen and Enbihaar in Lillie Langtry
3.00 Goodwood
Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 3) | 1m6f | 3yo+ | fillies & mares | ITV/RUK
The Lillie Langtry Stakes plays host to the third and deciding round between Dramatic Queen and Enbihaar, following two titanic battles at York and Haydock that ended with honours even.
It was the William Haggas-trained Dramatic Queen who took round one when denying Enbihaar by half a length in the Bronte Cup at the Knavesmire but the daughter of Kitten's Joy had to settle for a neck second behind John Gosden's charge in the Lancashire Oaks last month.
Haggas, who has yet to win the Group 3 contest, said: "It's round three after we beat her over 1m5f and she beat us in the Lancashire Oaks, so I hope we can come out on top this time around. She's giving us 3lb so that's helpful and she'll like the ground."
That 3lb penalty might well prove the difference but the Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Enbihaar, the winner of three of her six starts, arrives at the Sussex Downs having produced a career-best Racing Post Rating last time.
Gosden said of the four-year-old: "She ran well at Haydock and we're now meeting the runner-up again. She has won at Goodwood and the race should suit her.
"She is a Group 2 winner carrying a penalty but, having said that, she won a Lancashire Oaks, she is in very good form and we're hopeful of a solid show from her."
Last year's heroine back for more
Cheveley Park's Pilaster looked progressive when landing her third win on the bounce in this race last year and bids to return to form here after failing to reproduce that effort in three starts this term.
The daughter of Nathaniel, last seen finishing third, three and a half lengths behind Klassique on heavy ground at Haydock, has a chance to prove her well-being back at a track that suits but has it do against the market leaders on ratings.
Trainer Roger Varian said: "She’s in good form but she’s not quite had the year that we’d have hoped for up to this point. We’d love a bit more ease in the ground but it’s similar to what she won on last year and we know the race and the track suits her. It would be lovely if she could win again."
What they say
Aidan O’Brien, trainer of Peach Tree, Flowering Peach and South Sea Pearl
South Sea Pearl is a progressive filly and won the Vinnie Roe Stakes over the trip at Leopardstown in good style. She came out of the race well and we're happy with her. Peach Tree is a Group 3 winner over the distance and is back up in trip after running sixth in the Irish Oaks. The trip and ground will suit Flowering Peach who was fourth behind South Sea Pearl last time.
Ralph Beckett, trainer of Manuela De Vega
She didn't have a hard race in the Irish Oaks and has come out of the race well so we're trying again with her. Her sister [Isabel De Urbina] didn't stay when she ran in the race last year but there are reasons for thinking she will be able to stay better.
