'She's a filly in form' - can consistent Ashky land another Newmarket handicap?

For many punters, this race will be an open-and-shut case. Queenlet was impressive when justifying favouritism at Musselburgh nine days ago and will swat aside a 6lb penalty for that victory.

However, she is actually wrong at these weights as the handicapper put her up only 4lb for her Musselburgh win. As a result, if she were racing after being reassessed, she'd be running with 2lb less on her back.

Trainer William Haggas is 4-14 (29 per cent) with runners who were reappearing within ten days of a win since the start of 2021, for a small £1 level-stake profit of £1.50. That suggests Queenlet might be able to overcome the extra 2lb and give Haggas a third win in this race in the last six years.

Queenlet does face a plethora of lightly raced three-year-olds, though, and all look open to a significant amount of improvement.

Light Of Peace has run only three times and recorded a career-best when second in a mile novice on the July course last time, despite being turned over as 1-2 favourite.

The handicapper has given her a mark of 84, but Racing Post Ratings have her on 88 and she could evidently be far better than her opening mark on her handicap debut.

The final word goes to Ashky, who has recorded form figures of 31131 at Newmarket and she is 1-2 on the Rowley Mile, including a course-and-distance victory last month. She is up 5lb, but Harry and Roger Charlton have booked Ryan Moore to ride.

Moore has five winners, two seconds, two thirds and two fourths from just 14 rides for the stable this year.

What They Say

Philip Robinson, racing manager to Mohammed Jaber, owner of Ashky
She’s a progressive filly who won nicely over course and distance last time from a fancied one of Charlie Appleby’s. I know the second let the form down next time but horses can go over the top at this time of year so I wouldn’t read too much into that. She’s a filly in form and we’re looking forward to another good run.

Tom Marquand, rider of Queenlet
She seems to be improving at just the right time and shaped as if this stiff mile would suit when winning over seven furlongs at Musselburgh last time.

Richard Hannon, trainer of Ellade
She’s back off a break but goes well fresh and this sort of trip should see her to best advantage. It’s a tough race but she would have an each-way shout.

Philip Robinson, racing manager to Abdullah Saeed Al Naboodah, owner of Nigwa
She missed an engagement at Newcastle recently with a minor issue but is a filly on the up and is ready to roll again. She’s back in trip but is not short of pace.

Ed Dunlop, trainer of My Silent Song
She was a bit unlucky not to win at Pontefract last time when she got hampered coming from off the pace. This is a stiffer race but she’ll enjoy the ground and looks sure to be thereabouts as she usually is.
