One race, one horse, one jockey and one trainer to watch at Goodwood

One race

The Sussex Stakes (3.15) has all the ingredients to be one of the races of the season, as Guineas winners Kameko and Siskin clash with classy four-year-old Mohaather over Goodwood's sharp mile track.

Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Siskin, trained by Ger Lyons, is unbeaten in five starts but faces his toughest test to date with Newmarket winner Kameko looking to bounce back after finishing fourth in the Derby.

Mohaather, an impressive winner of the Summer Mile at Ascot last time, flies the flag for the older horses, with the rest of the field comprising San Donato and Ballydoyle trio Wichita, Circus Maximus and Vatican City.

One horse

The 1m4f handicap for three-year-olds (2.15) looks to be brimming with a number of future Group horses but one to keep a close eye on is the David Simcock-trained Carlos Felix.

Still lightly raced, the son of Lope De Vega crushed his rivals in a handicap at Ascot last time and now takes aim at this valuable contest off a mark of 88.

Simcock suggested after the Ascot performance that Carlos Felix would be running in better races before too long and this is the next step up the ladder.

One jockey

Joe Fanning's association with Goodwood specialist Mark Johnston always makes him one to follow at this meeting.

As ever, Fanning has an excellent book of rides headlined by the Johnston-trained Pelekai who looks to hold leading claims in the 5f two-year-old fillies' conditions race (3.45).

All but one of Fanning's rides are currently single-figure prices and it would be no surprise to see the Johnston-Fanning axis toasting multiples successes once again on the South Downs.

One trainer

The Sussex Stakes is a landmark race but for Marcus Tregoning it could also mark his reemergence onto Flat racing's top table.

The trainer won the 2005 Dewhurst and 2006 Derby with Sir Percy but has since struggled to find a horse who could match the exploits of that Classic-winning colt.

However, in Hamdan Al Maktoum's Mohaather, Tregoning may just have found the one to catapult his operation back into the big time.
