Goodwood it is not but Brighton has its own charms for a different crowd as it opens for the Marathonbet three-day festival.

The beautiful people might be gearing up for Cowes week down the coast at the weekend but Brighton's own cosmopolitan crowd will rock the three days of competition which pales in comparison to the £1m races last week.

Brighton has its equally historic races in the Brighton Mile (4.00) and Challenge Cup but the locals will also enjoy two sellers, races made fashionable by top racing journalists David Ashforth and Ian Carnaby, who rarely miss the meeting.

Bath, smarting from losing its Good Friday feature day next year, and Pontefract add to the afternoon action, with Sligo holding its local Oaks (4.35) on a richly endowed card.

Yarmouth adds more seaside fun in the evening with another all-weather meeting at Kempton.

Final thought

It is a pity Brighton could not find a race for Roy Rocket but in the grey's absence that other course specialist Pour La Victoire (4.00) has the chance to hog the headlines with a record-breaking tenth course win today.
