Richard Hannon dominates Newbury card with fantastic 4,458-1 five-timer
Richard Hannon stole the show at Newbury on Tuesday when rattling off a 4,458-1 five-timer, headlined by the impressive success of Qaysar in the feature mile handicap.
Qaysar's four-and-a-half-length victory made it four wins in four races for Hannon, whose quickfire sequence started with Chatham House's triumph in the 7f handicap.
And after two rare reverses it was business as usual for Hannon as Ritchie Valens landed the final contest on the card to complete a magnificent day and bring up the trainer's 100th winner of the year.
He said: "It’s been a lovely day and I'm very pleased. They all ran well all day and it’s great to have the 100th winner.
"It’s a first five-timer, at one track at least. It’s unbelievable, some days you have some good chances and it goes right but a lot of days it doesn’t. It’s great to have this at my local track too."
Hannon's winners
Chatham House (Sean Levey)
Sesame Birah (Silvestre de Sousa)
D Day (James Doyle)
Qaysar (James Doyle)
Ritchie Valens (Oisin Murphy)
Sandwiched between the victories of Chatham House and Qaysar – who had both previously underachieved but now appear on the right path – were wins for juveniles Sesame Birah and D Day.
It has been a golden fortnight for Hannon, who has saddled 18 winners, including three at Glorious Goodwood last week. The Shergar Cup is the feature meeting in Britain this weekend and Hannon revealed that Qaysar could be turned out quickly to feature on the card.
Qaysar and D Day were ridden by James Doyle, who also won the opener on Wejdan to record a 340-1 treble.
