Get set for Super Saturday and the superstar sprinters
July Cup the main course in feast of action
They call it Super Saturday. For some it will be very super indeed.
This is an afternoon when over 100,000 people will pay to go racing, ten contests across three meetings are shown live on Channel 4 and prize-money of nearly £1.6 million is up for grabs at four afternoon fixtures. At one of them Europe's premier sprint will be decided with the Darley July Cup providing the centrepiece of a day that provides a veritable plethora of riches.
At York the John Smith's Cup, a contest boasting the world's longest continuous Flat racing sponsorship at 57 years, will be run for £200,000, making it Britain's most valuable middle-distance handicap. At Ascot the £120,000 Summer Mile headlines a card that also offers a £100,000 5f handicap and not only Ant but Dec as well. At Chester, Graham Lee returns following over a month on the sidelines with six rides in front of the usual huge Roodee crowd.
