'He had a great time last season' - the key races and horses at Newcastle
Enemy embarks upon a winter all-weather campaign at Newcastle in the BetUK Over 40,000 Live Streamed Races Conditions Stakes (2.54) which trainer Ian Williams hopes will culminate in the £150,000 All-Weather Marathon Final on Championships Day in April.
The five-year-old failed to add to his victory in the Queen’s Cup at Musselburgh in four subsequent races on turf this year, but those events included the Group 1 Goodwood Cup and the Ebor Handicap at York.
Enemy underwent wind surgery after finishing 14th of 20 behind Trawlerman at York in August, and Williams said: “Enemy is in good shape. He has had a decent break since the Ebor and starts back with a view to potentially going out to Dubai.
“He had a great time of it last season and winning the big handicap at Musselburgh was a bit of a highlight. I hope the next 12 months can be just as good for him.
“What we do going forward will depend on how he performs and how the early part of next year goes for him, but this looks a good starting point.”
The extended 2m contest – the first of four Fast-Track Qualifiers for the Good Friday final – has only attracted three runners, but they also include the Hugo Palmer-trained Solent Gateway, who finished third behind Trueshan in Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate in June.
He is another who was given a wind operation after his last race and Palmer said: “Solent Gateway has been off the track for a long time but he did run very well over the course and distance in the Northumberland Plate.
“We felt giving him an early break with a view to an all-weather campaign would be a good idea and I am looking forward to getting him back on the track.”
Unbridled Power, who had three starts in bumpers for Willie Mullins prior to joining Rebecca Menzies, completes the field.
Pocket The Packet, winner of four of his last five starts, bids to add to his impressive tally for George Boughey in the Talksport Powered By Fans Nursery (4.00).
The son of Mayson has proved something of a revelation since being gelded in June, returning to win two handicaps at both Newcastle and Lingfield.
He didn’t appear to have a hard race when beating Profitable Dawn by a length and a quarter at Lingfield on Wednesday, and is likely to prove hard to beat once again under a 6lb penalty.
The Karl Burke-trained filly Cariad Angel, who graduates to handicaps on a mark of 73, is likely to prove extremely competitive off that rating and could throw down the biggest threat to Pocket The Packet.
Brewing, unbeaten in two starts for William Haggas, moves into handicaps on a mark of 83 in the Spreadex Sports Best Odds On Sunderland Handicap (4.30), and is a most interesting performer for punters to weigh up.
A winner over course and distance on his debut in October, he looks to have plenty of potential.
